This problem has been reported already, see
<http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/tramp-devel/2004-01/msg00047.html>.
Fixed since then in CVS. You might upgrade to CVS Tramp, or wait for
Tramp 2.0.39 (I believe Kai is preparing such a beast).
