I'm not 100% sure what you were saying, but maybe you tried to edit
the file (well, directory) /dev:/ and expected Tramp to kick in?
On XEmacs, Tramp uses a different filename syntax, which looks like
this:
/[method/address@hidden/path/to/file
You can leave out the method:
/address@hidden/path/to/file
You can also leave out the user name:
/[host]/path/to/file
Note that the square brackets are part of the filename syntax, and
that there is no colon.
