I guess you are talking about marking a thread as read at once.
It was in Pan some time ago and I also thought it to be very useful. Now I use
edit->select thread and then mark as read. So maybe that is a good starting
point for the feature you propose.

I'm working on a feature to complete an article thread.
That is, given a partial thread, construct the entire thread using an
article's references: header.
I personally, would find this quite usefull.
I was wondering if this feature would be usefull enough to other people to
warrant submitting a patch.
