As a quick preci of the new system as it stands as a compromise between
all the thoughts posted here:

All rolls are Attribute (old abilities) + Ability (old skills) versus
difficulty of 0-20 (normal human range, higher for heroic or super
campaigns). Criticals are dumped in favour of open-ended success/failure
point system (10+ success points is considered a critical success).

Enrique's excellent suggestion for exploding dice rules are added in the
optional complications section beneath the main task resolution rules. I
suuggest we have both negative and positive exploding dice (a natural
roll of 1 means you roll again and subtract the amount).
