I don't use nqmacs, but your problems are reproducible with Emacs
22.0.50 under GNU Debian as well.

It's not obvious, I know. But in the ange-ftp case, Tramp is handing
over all actions to ange-ftp functions. Mostly.

I've debugged it shortly. Seems to be a problem in
`ange-ftp-insert-directory'.

This problem has been reported already, see
<http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.tramp/1586>. Unfortunately, not
fixed yet.
