I've tried su and it works for me on
- FreeBSD 4.9-PRERELEASE i386
- 21.4 (patch 13) "Rational FORTRAN" XEmacs Lucid
- Tramp version 2.0.35 (the newest I can get through cvs up -A).
I can't try sudo, because the prompt pattern leads to a login failed
(same old story :-)). I've attached the tramp/sudo buffer

> (setq tramp-debug-buffer t)
IIRC, you have to issue these two commands the other way round to get
a debug buffer.
