I think the main benefit you get from using Tramp is that it parses
filenames for you. So if your filenames look like
/imap:address@hidden:something, then Tramp can help.
I vaguely remember that Michael changed some parts of Tramp so that
tramp-smb.el became easier, so I think he could also benefit from one
utility function or three. Michael?
In the end, I guess that you will have to implement most of the stuff
yourself, anyway.
