Connection function

Just built todays cvs of tramp.  I have `sm' as default method.
Attempting to connect to remote machine `amd400' with this file name
syntax:
(taken from usage examples)
/amd400:.emacs  <RET>

tramp-get-connection-function: \
Method `sm' didn't specify a connection function

I don't see this mentioned in the `configure to run' help section,
but looking up the function with c-h f seems to indicate its not
documented any way.

  tramp-get-connection-function is a compiled Lisp function in `tramp'.
  (tramp-get-connection-function MULTI-METHOD METHOD USER HOST)
  not documented

What else is needed here?
