Ick. md5.el says that it looks to see if the buffer is small. If it
is big, it invokes the external program.
I suggest that you try to change what "small" means and then I hope
it will use Lisp. (setq md5-maximum-internal-length
most-positive-fixnum) appears to be useful. On older Emacsen, you
might need (require 'cl) before it.
