It turns out that I had code before that checked if the
encoding/decoding commands worked. It felt silly to delete that
code, so the new version now searches for a sane combination and then
checks to see if that works.
So that means if the new code finds a sane combination but it turns
out that it doesn't work, then we lose :-|
