My wild guess is that 'real' manuals with Unicode are still not very
common
I'm sure that is true. And I think that is fine.
I remain disinclined to change anything here until someone gives us an
example where our behavior causes a problem.
After all, if a user incorrectly writes "a" and "ring" characters in
their input, very likely what they really want is the "aring"
character. If they are really talking a and ring separately, they would
need to do something to separate them anyway.
