Follow-up Comment #2:

Done! Fixed! This problem had to do with a missing '-' that I had mistakenly
not added in "non-gnu" by typing it in as "nongnu" when I did the original
fix.  Sorry.  Which reduced the problem to the original thing that I had seen
before.

As to the original problem something is "unfixing" work that is happening. 
There must be two competing scripts running and one is setting things up and
one is mistakenly tearing things down.
