Why echo hello as stdin to your stty ?
stty doesn't like stdin in general.
On a debian 6 machine I get this:
$ echo hello | stty
stty: standard input: Inappropriate ioctl for device
$ echo | stty
stty: standard input: Inappropriate ioctl for device
$ stty
