This is, again, a shell issue.
$ command foo&bar
is, for most shells, equivalent to
$ command foo bar &
or
$ command foo &
$ bar
or some such. Depending on the shell, the ? might also cause trouble
(but shells vary more in that regard).
Quoting it with ' ' avoids this.
