Perhaps go via PDF, and take care to include fonts in the PDF --- I have:
$ type ps2pdf
ps2pdf is aliased to `ps2pdf -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress'
(This is not specific to OS X; I have had your problem also under linux.)
