Columns and double page spreads

Hi,

I've often wondered if it is possible in a @Book that uses a single
column to have one or more arbitrary pages laid out in two or more
columns. Given that this is done in the index it must be possible, but
is there a nice easy way to do it?

Also, is it possible to have a two page spread in a @Book, that is, say,
a @Diag or @Figure or @Table that spans two pages (but with the inner
margins still preserved)?
