   And while I'm complaining about builder noise on Tru64, it's not so
great on Solaris, either.  Using the (now free!) Sun C compiler instead
of gcc leads to a complaint on every compilation:

      cc: Warning: illegal option -fno-strict-aliasing

So far as I can see, "-fno-strict-aliasing" is hard-coded into
Makefile.in, which seems a bit optimistic.
