Submenu Defaults

With the introduction of the submenu in 1.99, is there a way to
designate a default kernel/OS which is located within the submenu?

So far, several of us have been unable to designate a submenu default OS
via any of the following methods:

GRUB_DEFAULT=number
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true  (in conjunction with GRUB_DEFAULT=saved)
GRUB_DEFAULT="actual title"
