Hi,

Just in case someone else might trip about this problem:

Thanks to phcoder I found the solution: Missing dependency on unifont >= 
v5.1 (I had actually v1.0 installed ;).

Like that grub-mkfont did not have all the glyphs it needed --> hence 
the empty ascii.bitmaps file.
