Most likely L (10.5) does not know about them. And if there are no smaller representations (<= 128x128) available, L doesn't know what to do.

That was my guess when opening Icon Composer under 10.4; there were no boxes for 256x256 and 512x512. However all icon sizes are included. It's rather odd; it looks more like the file format has changed slightly and Icon Composer from latest Xcode produces slightly different .icns that makes them unreadable under 10.4.

I'd definitely love to know more.
