Ok, I installed that and make worked (or at least something happened that 
took a long time), but I don't understand where to find the executable file 
to start Globulation 2. I didn't do a make install (it's not necessary, 
right?), since I thought that would conflict with the installation of the 
stable release.

Yes, please do so, the file I got from Kai Antweiler (thank you btw) didn't 
work.
