Shadowrun used an additive skill point system with sub skill groups, sub sub
skill groups and
possibly even more specialization. It worked well and was realistic, the only
problem I have with
it is that because of its multi specialization it was complicated.
It is possible to hack around a seperate skill point system to avoid the
problem of the generic
skill being higher than one point; but, to do so you essentially end up
creating an implicitly
additive system anyways, so why bother? The additive system works well, it
makes logical sense and
there's no need for arbitrary penalties or workarounds. For the sake of
simplicity I prefer either
completely seperate skills or only one level of skill groups. Should people
want the game to be
really simple, we could have only skill groups with no seperate skills at all.
