We probably should do that -- as far as I can tell, not only is awk(1) 
required by POSIX, but it was also present in all or nearly all 
pre-POSIX systems.  (If the GNU Coding Standards permit its availability 
to be assumed, as they do...)  I think that we can call a missing awk(1) 
a system configuration error.

AC_PROG_AWK is more to *select* an Awk implementation than to ensure 
that one exists.  (Adding a similar search to dejagnu(1) is now on my 
local TODO list.)
