Please remember not every user of GNU make has access to a POSIX
environment.
I'm not suggesting we re-implement POSIX shell, coreutils, etc. inside
GNU make. But, there may be a way to get a lot of bang for relatively
little buck, portability-wise.
It's at least worth discussing.
