I think you’re missing the fact that nobody is actually working on
these things. Make is an open-source project and not one of the ones
that has direct corporate backing or engineers paid to work on it. The
consistent message from the maintainer has been “if someone presents a
production-quality patch implementing this (or any) feature it will be
reviewed and accepted if good enough”. In this case it would have to
be good enough to assuage concerns about adding stateful-ness. To date
there have been many good discussions and ideas but no implementation
which has risen to that standard.
