Is performance when printing out messages a concern? I don't think
it is a problem. I would just let gettext do its magic when needed.
Anyway, at the TP I cannot just change the encoding of a file -- it is
the prerogative of the translators to decide what encoding they want
to use. Of the Danish team I know that they prefer to hold on to the
ISO-8859-1 encoding.
But... to improve things I have relinked the latest/m4/*.po files
at the TP, from the last translator-submitted PO file (many of which
are almost twenty years old) to the 1.4.18d PO files that I merged
together from three different PO files (m4, gnulib, and glibc).
Apart from Danish, Galician, and Indonesian, they are now all in
UTF-8. And they now contain many more translated strings (those
imported from gnulib and glibc).
