This is the problem. Perhaps file is not installed, or it is
internationalized and it prints messages in Spanish, different from
those in English expected by libtool? I believe newer releases of
libtool force the language to English, to avoid this problem, but if
you don't have /usr/bin/file, it still wouldn't work, if it were not
for the fact that newer releases will no longer rely on /usr/bin/file
on GNU/Linux systems.
Short answer: time to upgrade libtool :-)
