The question mark above suggests you were not running the test in a
Unicode-capable locale.  I think you may need to first run:

  export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8

or something similar.

Could you check whether that helps?

Hmm this one is unclear; it passes on my laptop.  Needs more
investigation…
