I boot Linux 2.4.18 from Grub. The Grub command lines are:
root (hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-3 ro root=/dev/hda6 hdd=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.4.18-3.img
If I let the Grub bootloader run automatically, my Linux system boots
perfectly. But if I go into the Grub command line during the boot
process and type exactly the same commands followed by "boot", things
go wrong. Linux starts booting normally, but after writing this line
to the console:
apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03 (Driver version 1.16)
the system halts. (Normally, the next line on the console would have
been "Starting kswapd".)
Not surprisingly, I have the same problem if I run the bootloader from
a floppy.
I'm sure I've misunderstood something, but I cannot find out what it
is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(I should add, perhaps, that I can boot Windows without any problems,
both when Grub runs automatically, and when I type the commands
myself.)
Best wishes,
