I have made a new, and substantially more powerful version of the script
that filters MIME-encoded e-mail before it is piped into GNATS. As well as
fully decoding headers and bodies of messages, it now handles multi-part
messages containing attachments.
It strips out the parts of a message that are not plain text, decoding
those parts and saving them to an archive directory. Separate directories
are created on-the-fly to hold the contents of each message. A reference is
then inserted into the original message, stating the location of the saved
file. The parts of the message that were originally in plaintext get their
quoted printables translated and are otherwise left alone.
Details, together with the script itself, is available from
http://sources.redhat.com/gnats/mimedecode.html
We have been running this script in production for a week, and it has
behaved perfectly well. However, do read the warnings at the end of the
page mentioned.
