Password encryption

I have installed gnats 4.0 with gnatsweb in my office.  Every thing is working fine except one thing.

The gnatsd.access file requires the user's passwords to be entered in cleartext and this is stored as a cookie in the webserver as clear text.

 

This allows users to know other's passwords.

 

How can I prevent this.  I want the passwords to be stored in encrypted form both in gnatsd.acess and in the webserver's cookie.

 

Is there any other mechanism?
