Well, how does it hang? Are you out of disk space? How big is the file?
To what type of disk/filesystem are you writing? Are you crossing
filesystems? Is this local or does it involve the network? What does
something simple like top say when the cp is running and then when the cp
hangs? Are you hitting a filesystem size limit? Have you tried strace
to see what it says when cp gets stuck?
