In checking some details of shell behavior for a book that we are
finishing off, I found different behavior of
trap '...' DEBUG
handling on systems with bash versions built in the last couple of
years. However, all report
GNU bash, version 2.05b.0(1)-release (...)
This morning, I rechecked ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash, and found three
newer patches to the base bash-2.05b.tar.gz distribution. I
downloaded them, applied all seven of them, created a new distribution
that I labeled bash-2.05b.p7.tar.gz, and then built it on my fastest
system.
The DEBUG trap handling is now as documented in the bash manual in the
info system, but the version is still reported as 2.05b.0(1)!
Should the version not be something like 2.05b.0(7) or 2.05b.7.0(1) to
reflect the current patch level? Programs that behave differently but
claim the same version number should always be suspect.
