[AUCTeX] minipage environment is in text mode

hi,
auctex thinks that a minipage environment embedded in math mode
remains in math mode; so when i type
\[\begin{minipage}{0.5\textwidth}
 A formula $..$
\end{minipage}\]

AucTeX doesn't let me type the $..$ saying incorrectly that i'm in \[...\] mode.
