Why don't you try it?

I am sorry, I did not noticed that auctex had an auto-fill option, so
I could not get your point. My fault.
I have tried what you suggest, but I cannot set a different line
length for the normal text and the verbatim text. And, as you say, the
text is indented, and the indentation appears on the final document.

Breaking the output of a shell command across lines might not be a
good idea (depending on what the output is).  At least it might be
better to do this in output (i.e. DVI, PostScript or PDF) only and not
in the LaTeX source.  The listings package is able to do that.
